             COLLAPSE OF

             SOCIAL

             SECURITY

Since South Africa adopted its post-apartheid constitution in 1996, the country
has made important strides in realising the right to social security and in reducing
poverty and inequality. Policies, legislation and administrative infrastructure
have enabled the government to create an expansive social security system
which is the bedrock of human rights protection. However, several gaps in
the system and particularly, in execution, along with the ever-growing number
of those who rely on social assistance due to the rising cost of living, South
Africa’s debt burden, high levels of unemployment, poverty and inequality; the
sustainability of these systems in the medium to long-term is at risk.
